Welcome to Work Shift!

The go-to newsletter and network digital entrepreneurs—building a big life from a small biz đŸ’«

Delightful & insightful chats, connection, and community.

  • I write to think better about my craft, content connection, communication as culture, and the future of work (entrepreneurship)

  • I interview interesting people doing cool things for my “Bold Types” story series

  • I curate links to make you think, feel inspired (and stay sane) as a writer and creator in the AI age. I’m here for the little guy (that’s you!)

“The Shift” means two things to me: moving from 9-5 to self-employment and remote work when I had Julieta in 2006 and being more self-sufficient and selective: interesting, well-paid work that lights me up, cash and calendar freedom.

And now, more big shifts on the internet:

  • AI and exponential growth are coming fast. GPT-5 is launching in June, and it’ll be even smarter. I’m using Plus as a VA—genius human IQ? I’ll take that!

  • Jack Conte’s amazing keynote and storytelling at SXSW on the death of the follower and the future of creativity on the web. The biggest problem facing us all is the weakening of creator-led communities. The solution is a direct-to-fan biz model and deeper connections.

Exciting times—let’s see how the next wave of internet companies tackles this.

I think newsletters are the best thing since sliced bread—the most intimate form of journalism and your freedom vehicle.

Whether you sign up for free or upgrade to paid, I hope you’ll join me for the ride.

About me + Work Shift

me & my wingwoman

Wanted to be Jane Bond but ended up in journalism đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž

I run Firebird, the content consultancy helping entrepreneurs impact the world with their personal stories. Life is too short to play small.

Those who tell the stories run the world - George Monbiot

In a nutshell, I love a good story.

I’ve been in content and tech for 25 years, working independently and collaborating with agencies, companies, startups, as well as my own startup babies (Rude Magazine, Work Shift). I’ve published 11 books on health and wellness topics.

From 2015 to 2018, I hosted St Leonards Salon (talks/workshops/co-working) for creative businesses.

In folklore, the Firebird is a magical, glowing bird from a faraway land that flies around, giving hope to those who need it. A character that symbolises rebirth, beauty and magic. I plant seeds (stories) that grow and flourish when set free. I love that for me.

My mission is to help women build financial freedom through entrepreneurship to solve gender inequalities (I align with the UN 2030 Development Goal 5 to empower all women and girls.)

Home for now is a tiny apt on the English Riviera with my favourite human being: my daughter.

Simplifying my life and work. Saving for a grown-up gap year in Italy on my quest to find out how to Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones (nomad visa is finally here! 🇼đŸ‡č)

Have you seen it? Turns out the secret to a long, healthy, happy life is connection and community—sharing stories round the campfire, and a good bottle of EVOO.

Gotta have big, hairy, audacious goals, right?

Life’s too short for the in-between.
